The Findings

Results

The results of your complaint are called findings. There are four possible findings:

  1. Sustained: The complaint has been supported; the officer(s) involved acted improperly and will be appropriately disciplined
  2. Not Sustained: There was not enough evidence to prove the complaint true or false so no further action will be taken.
  3. Exonerated: The police officer(s) involved acted properly and will not be disciplined.
  4. Policy Failure-The allegation is true; however the:

    a. Member’s conduct did not violate department policy;

    b. Policy fails to address the member’s conduct; or

    c. Member’s conduct was consistent with policy or a written directive; however, the complaint was still wronged.

  5. Unfounded: The investigation found no basis to the complaint file.

  6. Sustained Other-Sustaining of violation or misconduct other than the allegations of the original complaint

The police chief will decide on a finding after the complaint has been reviewed. Further, he will inform the alleged victim through an official letter of the final decision.
