Minimum Qualifications

Requirements


  • Must be a United States citizen
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license
  • Must be at least 21years of age 
  • Has never been convicted, on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class B misdemeanor
  • Cannot have been convicted, under court ordered community supervision or probation of a Class B misdemeanor within the last 10 years
  • Cannot ever have been convicted of any offense classified as a felony.
  • Has never been convicted or placed on community supervision in any court of an offense involving family violence as defined under Chapter 71, Texas Family Code.
  • Cannot be prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle.
  • Cannot be prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition.
  • Must meet one of the following educational requirements:
    • High School graduate
    • Have passed a general educational development (GED) test indicating a high school graduation level
    • An honorable discharge from the armed forces of the United States after at least 24 months of active duty service
  • Must not have been discharged from any military service under less than honorable conditions, specifically:
    • Under other than honorable conditions
    • Bad conduct
    • Dishonorable
    • Any other characterization of service indicating bad behavior
  • Cannot have had a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) license denied by final order or revoked, or have a voluntary surrender of license currently in effect
  • Must meet the minimum TCOLE training standards and pass the TCOLE examination for each license sought
  • Cannot have violated any TCOLE rule or provision of Occupation Code Chapter 1701
  • Must be of good moral character
  • Must be capable of performing all essential job functions (this list is available from personnel department)
  • Must have the ability with both hands to hold and operate firearms and specialized equipment;
  • Must possess 20/20 vision, either corrected or uncorrected or uncorrected in each eye. Must be free of dichromatic color blindness, night blindness and any other visual deficiencies or limitations.
  • Must possess hearing that cannot exceed an average hearing loss of 25 decibels (ANSI) at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hertz; cannot exceed a single reading of 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, 3000 Hertz; cannot exceed a single reading of 35 decibels at 500 Hertz; and cannot exceed a single reading of 45 decibels at 4000 Hertz.
  • Not have any criminal charges pending or under indictment for any criminal offense;
  • Not be currently on court-ordered community service or probation for any criminal offense;
  • Not have excessive traffic tickets or accidents
