The primary duty of the Fire Marshal is to establish a fire-safe setting by upholding fire prevention codes, conducting public education initiatives, and providing training. The central focus is on prevention, aiming to safeguard lives and property by averting the initiation of fires and identifying and mitigating hazards that could potentially lead to fires.
This objective is achieved through activities such as reviewing building plans, educating the public about fire safety, conducting fire inspections, investigating fire incidents, and enforcing fire codes.
Duties
Fire Prevention and Code Enforcement:
- Uphold and enforce local fire prevention codes and regulations.
- Conduct inspections of buildings and facilities to ensure compliance with fire safety codes.
- Review building plans to assess fire safety measures and compliance.
Public Education:
- Develop and implement public education programs on fire safety.
- Conduct community outreach to raise awareness about fire prevention and safety measures.
- Provide training sessions for businesses, schools, and community groups.
Fire Investigations:
- Investigate the cause and origin of fires within the jurisdiction.
- Collaborate with law enforcement and other agencies to determine if fires are intentional or accidental.
- Compile and maintain records of fire incidents.
Training and Drills:
- Coordinate and conduct fire drills for businesses, schools, and other institutions.
- Provide training for firefighters and other emergency response personnel.
- Ensure that the community is prepared for emergencies through education and practice.
Code Development and Updates:
- Stay informed about changes in fire safety technologies and regulations.
- Contribute to the development and updating of local fire codes.
- Advocate for changes in codes to enhance public safety.
Emergency Response Coordination:
- Collaborate with emergency response agencies to ensure effective coordination during incidents.
- Participate in emergency response planning and exercises.
Permitting and Licensing:
- Review and issue permits related to fire safety (e.g., special events, hazardous materials storage).
- Monitor and ensure compliance with licensing requirements for businesses handling flammable materials.
Fire Safety Inspections:
- Conduct routine inspections of businesses, public spaces, and residential properties.
- Identify and address potential fire hazards.
- Work with property owners to rectify safety issues.
Community Engagement:
- Engage with the community through public meetings, workshops, and events.
